From rain to rise — Maruti Suzuki IPO, the purchase that proved instinct stronger than storm.

What is the best purchase you have ever made?

Oh! An interesting question!

The best purchase I ever made  was shares of Maruti Suzuki, India.

I applied through the IPO in 2002,  when  online submission systems  were not yet available.

It was a rainy season in Mumbai.  On the day of submission, heavy  rain and strong wind made it a  struggle just  to save  the umbrella and reach the office  of the Stock Holding Corporation  of  India. Yet I did not surrender  to  the situation—my instinct was firm to submit the  applications, one for myself and one for my wife.

We  were fortunate to receive allotments. My wife was even  luckier–she received 100 shares,  while I was allotted half that  number.I realized that the company seemed to give  priority to women applicants.

Why was this the best purchase?

The shares of Maruti Suzuki, bought at about $2.00 per share, are now trading above $100.00.

Other than the monetary gain, what I received was a feeling of deep satisfaction—having the right instinct at the right time to buy the shares.
