What’s the most annoying trope in books or movies?
As I have read and watched “Love triangle” stands out as the most annoying trope in both books and movies.
There is no need to refer to a particular book or movie, because the “love triangle” is itself the most common pillar of love stories—whether told in the book or shown on the screen. This trend has become internationally famous and popular, appearing across cultures and genres.
It usually follows a predictable pattern:
One character torn between two suitors, unable to decide.
Endless emotional tug‑of‑war that drags the story forward without real growth.
Recycled drama where the audience already knows how it will end.
Characters reduced to shallow roles—winner, loser, or indecisive center.

Though “Love triangle” is internationally popular, this repetition often feels manipulative and predictable.
